nesco pic 14 induction cooktop
Chances are the NESCO name will ring a bell for many, especially their slow cookers. They have been in business since the early 1930’s, and to this day manufacturer high quality kitchen appliances. They have expanded from the slow cookers to just about everything in the kitchen that you prepare food with.

Nesco PIC-14 is an electric induction cooking surface that you can take anywhere. A simple plug-in to a 110v outlet is all you need to start cooking on the PIC-14. Instead of manufacturing several models that do the same thing, they put their focus on this model alone to cover their portable induction cooktop product line. Nesco doesn’t have a slogan or catch sales phrase, they allow their high quality products speak for themselves.

Electric induction cooking is unique, as it doesn’t transfer heat to anything other than the type of metal that works with it. A magnet is included to check pans to make sure they will work with this induction cooktop. The only heat transferred is to the metal pan placed on the cooking surface. The Nesco PIC-14 is the most energy-efficient way to cook, up to twice as efficient as gas. The energy transfer is 84% with electric induction, which saves you money on your energy bill.

The clearly marked and easy to read display features push button controls. The power settings are easily moved up and down with up and down arrows. The red digital display allows you to easily see what power setting you’re on currently. The touch of a single power button will power the cooker on or off.

Power Settings

There are 5 different power settings so you can cook at the right temperature. It features a low-level to melt butter or keep food heated. The other power settings are clearly marked for you to choose the type of cooking you want to do including, simmer, boil, fry, and sear. It uses only 1500 watts of energy from a 110 volt power supply.

Safety Features

The unique design of electric induction cooking means the surface is not hot. The heat generated goes directly to the pan that you are cooking with. If the Nesco PIC-14 doesn’t detect a compatible cookware it automatically shuts off after 1 minute. It does not specifically have utensil safety features, so if you can happen to leave your spoon or fork in the cooking ring, it will heat up.

The overall cooking surface of this cooker is 10 inches in diameter. The heating coil is 10.5 inches, and the overall diameter is 11.5 inches.

Although the manufacturer recommends NOT to use cookware above 10″ in diameter, it is possible to use a 12-inch pan according to many users, but the entire surface will not get heated by the induction surface. Five quart pots which are 8 inches in diameter fit perfectly on the heating surface, and 6.5 quart pots have a 9.5 inch diameter which also fit, but are somewhat uncommon.

8-10 inch frying pans, and pots up to 5 quarts have the best results with this induction cooker.

Construction and Appearance

The design of the cooker is slim and sleek with an all black body and top. The top of the cooker is a flat ceramic surface that has an outline where you put the pan. The flat surface is easily cleaned and won’t burn on spilled food. The body of the cooker is a lightweight heat-resistant material. This allows you to cook on any surface without burning it.

Customer Reviews

With over 50 customer reviews online, this gadget is among the top-rated induction cooktops. This is due to the simple controls, which makes it easy to use that even someone with a disability can use use with ease. Because of its simplistic controls, some people complain that there’s little temperature control – you actually can’t set the exact temperature. Its intuitive interface makes it perfect for everyday use. Another complaint is uneven cooking; it tends to heat up well in the center but not around, this is partially due to its small diameter. If you want more control, you’d be better off with a Max Burton 6200 (this is what other users recommend instead). Read more here: Nesco PIC-14 Portable Induction Cooktop Review

Pros & Cons

product name prosPros:
This lightweight induction cooker is useable anywhere you have access to a 110 volt plug-in. It is small enough to toss in a backpack and take it with you anywhere, and lightweight too at 5.5 pounds. Virtually noise-free cooking with only the sound of a whisper-quiet fan.

The energy efficiency of conduction heating is the best that you can find anywhere, so it will save you money on your energy costs. This also means that it heats up faster than traditional methods of cooking.

Easy to use with simple power controls and on/off buttons only require the touch of these buttons. Various heat levels make the unit a good choice for any type of cooking.

High quality build from a trusted manufacturer, and includes a limited 1 year warranty.

Safe to use anywhere with a lower risk of burns and fire than other cooking methods. The unit automatically turns off if proper cookware is not applied to the surface within 1 minute.
product name consCons:
This unit only works with certain cookware that sticks to magnets. Many of the modern eco-friendly pots and pans don’t work with this unit.

Hard to control heat settings makes the unit get too hot or too cold for proper cooking. Small heating coil distributes heat unevenly with the center being hotter than the outside of the heating surface.
